Instantaneous Vs Storage

Instantaneous Gas hot water heaters are by far the most popular on new builds and increasingly on replacements. There are several reasons for this:

·       Constant temperature

·       "limitless" hot water, it is generated instantly

·       Models can be cheaper than quality storage heaters

·       Long life span with little maintanence

·       Takes up very little space, roughly 450mm wide and 250mm from wall surface

However there are some disadvantages:

·       Larger gas supply required; they use 5x more gas in an hour when compared to a storage heater,         often requiring the installation of larger gas pipework as well as adjustments to the gas meter

·       Minimum flow requirement; Instantaneous heaters require at least ~2L/m to start heating, this           means that the heater lets through cold water for a short period before heating increasing the             lead time before warm water reaches your tap. This can also be an issue for some low flow tap           ware or shower ware and may require additional work/costs

·       Don't function when there is no electricity, no power results in instant cold water
